Discuss and reflect on how the working mathematically proficiencies integrate with use of an inquiry-based approach in mathematics education.

I believe that working mathematically proficiencies integrated with the use of an inquiry-based approach in mathematics education go hand in hand. However for teachers to successfully implement this integration they need to be prepared to plan hard to then deliver quality learning experiences for students. According to ACARA the proficiency strands are: understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning. If implemented correctly this will encourage students learning and students independance.

“Inquiry-based learning prioritises problems that require critical and creative thinking so students can develop their abilities to ask questions, design investigations, interpret evidence, form explanations and arguments, and communicate findings.”

This type of learning is a powerful way to give students the opportunity to explore through valuable social interactions, reasoning and having the safe space to have positive attitudes to failure.
